Il film, girato
quasi interamente a Venezia ad esclusione della sequenza iniziale, narra di due coniugi inglesi, John e Laura Baxter,
che si recano nella città lagunare per lavoro. Ciò 

pochi mesi dopo la tragica morte della figlia
minore Christine, annegata nello stagno della loro villa. L'evento tragico era stato misteriosamente previsto dal padre,
pochi attimi prima che 

accadesse...

Impegnato nella conduzione di alcuni lavori di restauro nella
chiesa veneziana di San Niccolò, John deve occuparsi della salute della moglie, caduta in depressione a causa della
recente 

scomparsa della figlia. Durante un pranzo in un locale pubblico Laura conosce due sorelle scozzesi,
Heather e Wendy, la prima delle quali è priva della vista, ma dotata di poteri medianici 

che le
consentono di comunicare a Laura un evento straordinario: la medium ha appena "visto" accanto a Laura e a John una
piccola bambina bionda sorridente. Si tratta della la piccola
